Pompeii, the city of the Roman Empire, was founded in the 6th century BC. and destroyed with Herculaneum, Oplonti, and Stabia during the eruption of Vesuvius in the year 79 AD. Buried under several meters of volcanic sediment, preserved from lousy weather and looting, the city fell into oblivion for fifteen centuries. However, the state of conservation of the ancient Roman city is remarkable. The excavations undertaken since the 18th century will bring to light a thriving city, a precious testimony of ancient Rome’s urban planning and civilization. The archaeological site and Herculaneum have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1997.
